Spinworkx First Mount #12 - Sidestyle Wrist Mount

The Wrist Mount is possibly one of the coolest Mounts out there in the Spinning world, and it sure does look cool and nifty. Initially, the Wrist Mount may look a little daunting to perfect as missing strings or making a wrong hope may lead to a knot, but fear not! With practice, you will be astounding and amazing your friends in no time.

This Mount got its name from the obvious fact that you will need to swing the yo-yo and string over your wrist to get into the Mount. Once you are in the Mount and the yo-yo is sitting on the string, it will be hanging on the wrist of your throwing-hand.

Without further ado, lets see how to perform the Sidestyle Wrist Mount.

First, throw a Breakaway (sounds familiar?) and swing the yo-yo around your non-throwing hand index finger just like performing a Double or Nothing, etc.

Once it is over your non-throwing hand finger, swing it over to your throwing hand but instead of the yo-yo string landing on your throwing hand finger, have it land on the top of your throwing hand wrist and then let it continue swinging over to your non-throwing hand.

When it is swinging back around your non-throwing hand, let it hit your non-throwing hand index finger (similar to Double or Nothing) but aim the yo-yo to land between the 'triangle that has formed by the two string segments that are (1)over your wrist and (2) string tied/attached to your middle finger.

You will need to land the yo-yo onto the bottom string, between the 'triangle'.

Once you have landed the yo-yo onto the string, in between the 'triangle', let go of all the strings on your non-throwing hand, and there you have it, the Sidestyle Wrist Mount.

The Sidestyle Wrist Mount is well known to be the first step in difficult Wrist Mount tricks such as Spirit Bomb, Superman, etc. These tricks may be tough at first, but practice your tricks step by step and take it slow and steady. Once you are able to master one component of the trick, move on and work on the subsequent steps and you will be pulling off Wrist Mount tricks like a breeze.

A few pointers to take note of when learning the Sidestyle Wrist Mount:
1) Practice, Practice, Practice!!
2) Try to aim the yo-yo to fall in-between the strings before landing on the bottom string into the Wrist Mount. Don't just swing it around and around and hope it lands correctly.
3) Try to open the 'triangle' bigger so that it will be easier for the yo-yo to land in-between. You can do this by moving the string slightly further up your throwing hand wrist.

That is all for #12 of the Spinworkx First Mount Project.

Spinners promoted to Pro 2013

With SYYC 2013 recently over, we have determined the Spinners that are moving on to Pro for the 2013/2014 contest season.

After looking and tallying the results, only one name managed to make it through to the Pro division, and it is none other than …

Ian Loh

Ian has only been playing for about 2 years, and has improved tremendously since we first saw him spinning. At the recent SYYC, we did expect Ian to do well in his favored 1A division. Little did we know that Ian had a big surprise in store for all of us. Not only did Ian do well in the 1A division, taking home the Gold medal, he continued to excel in each and every division, taking the Gold for 2A, 4A and 5A, every division possible!

We were able to have a little chat with Ian and here is what he had to say about his promotion to Pro.

Spinworkx Crew: Hi Ian, congrats on the multiple Spinner division titles, and being the only Spinner this year to be promoted to the Pro division. How do you feel about winning every Spinner division possible?

Ian Loh: I felt very happy that all my hardwork paid off because I had practiced a lot before SYYC. Although I do play all the divisions from time to time, I feel that perhaps I should concentrate on stick to just 1 or 2 divisions.

Spinworkx Crew: So leading up to SYYC, how long did you practice each day?

Ian Loh: Well, I started practicing a month before SYYC for my 1 minute freestyles. I practice about 2 hours a day proper, but at times I would just fool around with tricks and do random Lacerations and Combos.

Spinworkx Crew: But that is for your 1A tricks right? What about for 2A, 4A and 5A?

Ian Loh: For my 2A/3A and 4A 1 minute freestyles, i practiced a week before SYYC for about an hour each day. But for my 5A, i practiced 2 weeks before for about half an hour each day only.

Spinworkx Crew: With all the practice, were you confident in doing well for all 4 divisions?

Ian Loh: I was actually expecting a 2nd or 3rd place finish for 1A because of the strong competition and competitors. Players like Lester and Kendrick were definitely tough to beat. I did feel more confident for the other divisions though.

Spinworkx Crew: That's great! So now are you looking forward to the Pro Division and going up against the seasoned Pro players?

Ian Loh: I'm pretty excited for the up-coming EST in September, but I don't expect to get a high placing for both 2A/3A and 5A, but I will try my best!

Spinworkx Crew: Lastly, do you have any tips or advice for current Spinners?

Ian Loh: If you want to be the best, you need to practice A LOT and don't give up! Whenever you need help or advice with combos that you are stuck on, ask the guys hanging at Spinworkx and they will definitely help you out. Never give up and continue spinning! :)

Spinworkx Crew: That is great advice! All the best for the 2013/2014 contest season, Ian. Once again, congrats on making it to the Pro division, and go give the 'big boys' a run for their money!

Spinworkx would like to congratulate Ian Loh on his recent performance, and being promoted to Pro, at the Singapore Yo-Yo Championships 2013 and Asia Pacific Yo-Yo Championships 2013. Well done, Ian!

Format for SYYC Spinner Division promotion to Pro Division (2013 onwards)

In the past, there were a few loop-holes with the promotion criteria for Spinners to Pro for all YYAS competitions in Singapore (SYYC, WCC & EST). For 2013, we are further narrowing the promotion criteria for Spinners to Pro, and have come up with a triple criteria for promotion. After speaking with the Spinners about this, we are implementing this new promotion for 2013/2014.

**Do note that the following criterion for promotion to Pro Division will only take place at the Singapore Yo-Yo Championships (SYYC) only.

The 3 Criterias to meet are as follows:
1) Only the top 10% of players from each division gets promoted. If the division has less than 10 competitors, there will be no promotions.

2) These top % of players must have a score of 75 or higher to be promoted.

3) If a division has less than 10 competitors, and the same competitor has won 2 back-to-back Spinner Champion titles in the same division (1st place in 2013 & 1st place in 2014), he/she will be eligible to become Pro. **Note that for this, the back-to-back champion must also have a score of 75 or higher for both Champion winning Spinner Freestyles.

Remember that for SYYC, although there are still Spinners and Pros, if the Spinners do well enough and 'beat out' some Pros for the 3 minute Finals Freestyle slots, then they get their chance to do and showcase their 3 minute freestyle against the rest of the Pros.

Here are some examples of various situations and how the promotion will work.

Scenario 1
A division has 15 players and the1st place has a score of 95 and 2nd place has a score of 82 and 3rd place has a score of 76. Although the 2nd & 3rd place competitors have met Criteria 2 of a score of 75 or higher, only 10% of players from each division gets promoted. Hence only the 1st place gets promoted.

Scenario 2
A division has 5 players and the 1st place has a score of 100 and 2nd place has a score of 59. Although the 1st place competitor has met Criteria 2 of a score of 75 or higher, only 10% of players from each division gets promoted. As the division only has 5 players, there will be no promotions to Pro UNLESS this same person has won Spinner in the same division last year as well.

Bonus
If a Spinner is able to qualify for the 3min finals at the World Yo-Yo Contest, or the Asia Pacific Yo-Yo Championships, he/she will be promoted to Pro.

Go for GOLD Spinners and do not give up! Take the time, practice and perfect your tricks/routine, and before you know it, you will be challenging the Pros for the National Champion title!

Yo-Yo Setup of the Month: sOMEThING SUPERFLY Remix

After the busy contest season (Asia Pacific Yo-Yo Championships & World Yo-Yo Contest) winds down, things are not slowing down on the Spinning front, with players more inspired and driven after the 2 biggest contests on the planet. So coming out of BIG contests, what better way to continue this tradition than with another awesome yo-yo.

Take a look at this beauty, the sOMEThING SUPERFLY Remix (Asia Pacific Yo-Yo Championships 2013 Edition).

SUPERFLY Remix

When sOMEThING first came out with the original 7075 SUPERFLY, people found it good but wanted more out of their throw. Not that the SUPERFLY was not a good yo-yo but everyone just felt that something (pun not intended) was lacking. Then sOMEThING creator, Hiroyuki Suzuki had an idea. Why not mash up two of his yo-yos together to create a throw that brought the best of both worlds together. What you see in the SUPERFLY Remix is exactly that.

When players like Christopher Chia and Kazuya Murata tried the SUPERFLY Remix, they loved it so much that they just had to get their hands on one. In Kazuya's case, he continues to use the SUPERFLY Remix up to this day, choosing it as his main throw for the Asia Pacific Yo-Yo Championships 2013.

sOMEThING by YoYoAddict is an independent yo-yo manufacturer from Japan, and the owner Hiroyuki Suzuki (Mickey) is a 4-time World Yo-Yo Champion in the 1A division. Mickey has been well known to be flashy and loves to product and use things that are outstanding and eye-catching. The SUPERFLY Remix is no different.

The SUPERFLY Remix features the nice and wide profile of the original SUPERFLY but with the rims that are just like the ANGLE. Not only does this give it a more comfortable feel in the hand, it adds a touch more balance to the weight, providing just enough rim weight for super long spin-times, and yet still keeping the overall weight distributed fairly.

The SUPERFLY Remix requires no modifications or setting up straight out of the package. It uses a clean ADC bearing (concaved-shaped) that is sOMEThING's very own bearing, and sOMEThING Pads for tighter binds. When playing with a sOMEThING yo-yo, it is evident that their yo-yos are able to bind tighter than any other modern day, large bearing yo-yos. This is due to the fact that the pads stick out of the yo-yo just a little more than other yo-yos, providing spectacular binds for players.

For our choice of string to accompany the SUPERFLY Remix, we chose to use regular Green 100% Poly Strings. These regular Poly Strings gives the yo-yo a nice solid throw, keeping the yo-yo unresponsive for those fast, long-spinning combos Hiroyuki does in his contest-winning freestyles.

As mentioned in the paragraph above, the SUPERFLY Remix uses a concaved-shaped bearing known as the ADC bearing. This is the Addict bearing that is found in almost the entire range of yo-yos from sOMEThING by YoYoAddict. This bearing comes clean and dry out of the box, guaranteeing that these yo-yos are built for modern day unresponsive and competitive play.

Another nice little touch that sOMEThING presented on the SUPERFLY Remix was the printing of the yo-yo logo on the front-facing rims on the yo-yo. This gives the impression that the logo is being magnified outwards from the heart of the yo-yo all the way to the edge. This is not commonly seen in other yo-yos, and adds a classy touch to the yo-yo's presentation.

The SUPERFLY Remix spins long and smooth with its stock setup. Furthermore, with the ADC bearing, you can rest assured that the string will constantly stay centered throughout the course of your entire trick or combo. With the way the yo-yo is designed, players will be able to feel the stability and solidness that the SUPERFLY Remix provides.

Just to recap on our yo-yo setup of the month.

SUPERFLY Remix

1) sOMEThING SUPERFLY Remix (AP 2013 Edition)
2) sOMEThING Type 1 Pads
3) 100% Polyester String (Green)
4) Large ADC Bearing

Now just to show you what the SUPERFLY Remix is capable of, here is a video of 6 year old Kazuya Murata at the Asia Pacific Yo-Yo Championships 2013 throwing his favorite SUPERFLY Remix and tearing up the stage. Power-packed all in such a small package. Enjoy!

Spinworkx Around the World: Thailand

After the hecticness of AP 2013, we needed some time off for some good ol' R-n-R! Where else to go for a little quiet and away time than the nice Sunny beaches of Phuket, Thailand. Also, some shopping in the heart of Bangkok didn't hurt either.

Thailand, other than having pristine and beautiful beaches, have some of the most friendly and helpful people around. Furthermore, they are very loyal to their King and their religion. The culture in Thailand is unique, and if you have not been to Thailand before, it is somewhere you definitely need to travel to. Check out some of the places (and food) we were at when we were there.
